EZ-Switch 3 User Manual
EZ-Switch 3 runs an RV motor from your phone or from a ring on your finger. Awnings. Schwintek and SlimRack slides. You stand where you can see what you are moving instead of leaning on a wall switch and hoping.
You get real control, not just on and off. Pick how fast it goes. Pick how gently it starts and stops. Set the point where it shuts off if something binds. Watch battery voltage and motor current live while it runs. Every unit keeps its own service record of hours, cycles and faults.
There are three ways to run it. All three work at the same time. Use whichever one is in your hand.
1. Hook it up
Power. Plug the 8 pin aviation cord into your CODDIWOMPLE. That is the only power the EZ-Switch 3 needs. Wait about 15 seconds for it to wake up.
Awning. Plug the awning extension cable straight onto the 6 pin Molex output on the EZ-Switch 3. You do not need an adapter.
Schwintek or SlimRack slide. Unplug motor 1 and motor 2 from the slide controller. Put the Y splitter adapter between those two motors and the EZ-Switch 3 output.
Please read this part
When you drive a motor with the EZ-Switch 3, you are going around the factory controller. The factory limits, the factory stall protection, and the factory motor sync are all switched off while you are running. You are the safety system now.
- Watch the equipment the whole time it is moving.
- Stop when it reaches the end of its travel.
- If it stops moving, let go. Do not keep holding the button.
On a slide, both motors run together, so the slide controller loses count of where the room is. Resync the slide controller when you are finished. On a Schwintek, that is the 1 inch to 2 inch bump window.
2. Run it from your phone over Wi-Fi
This is the main way to use the EZ-Switch 3, and it is the one we recommend. There is nothing to download, no account to make, and no cell signal needed. The EZ-Switch 3 makes its own Wi-Fi network and serves its own screen.
- On your phone, open your Wi-Fi settings.
- Join the network named EZ-Switch by SkillAbove. There is no password.
- The control screen usually opens by itself.
- If it does not open by itself, which is normal on a lot of Android phones, open your web browser and type http://4.3.2.1 into the address bar. You can also scan the left QR code on the lid of the unit, which takes you to the same place.
Your phone may warn you that this Wi-Fi network has no internet. That is correct and it is not a problem. The EZ-Switch 3 is not an internet connection. It is a control screen.
3. Run it from the ring remote
The ring is the nicest way to work. It goes on your finger, so both hands stay free and your eyes stay on the slide instead of on a screen.
The ring we use
We do not sell the ring. We use one we buy on Amazon, and we are telling you exactly which one so you can buy the same one.
It is sold as a Multifunctional Ring Mouse, model D06. It is Bluetooth 5.3, it reaches about 30 feet, it charges with a USB-C cable, and it comes in a small charging case. Search Amazon for ring mouse D06 bluetooth. It shows up under several different brand names and they are all the same thing inside. If you want to be sure you have the right one, the box has FCC ID 2A66I-D03 printed on it.
Because we do not sell it, the ring is not covered by your EZ-Switch 3 warranty, and we cannot help with ring returns or ring battery problems. Buy it from a seller you trust.
What the ring buttons do
- Right button. Runs the motor one direction. Hold it down to keep running. Let go and it stops.
- Left button. Runs the motor the other direction. Hold it down to keep running. Let go and it stops.
- Scroll wheel. Changes top speed. Each click moves it 10 percent, between 20 percent and 100 percent.
- Click the scroll wheel. With the motor stopped, one click steps the start and stop ramp through Off, Soft, Moderate and Heavy. The light on the unit blinks to tell you which one you landed on. One blink is Off. Two blinks is Soft. Three blinks is Moderate. Four blinks is Heavy.
Click the scroll wheel. Do not hold it down. Holding the scroll wheel down puts the ring itself into pairing mode, which is a different thing.
Pairing a ring using your phone
- Join the Wi-Fi network named EZ-Switch by SkillAbove and open the control screen.
- Tap the Remote tab at the bottom.
- Tap Pair a Remote.
- Put the ring into pairing mode.
- Within a few seconds the light on the unit gives one long flash, and the Remote tab shows the ring as paired.
Pairing a ring with no phone at all
You can do all of this on the unit itself. Take the four screws out of the face plate and take the face plate off. Make sure the unit is already powered up and running. Find the small button that is furthest away from the two large round capacitors.
- One quick press. Opens pairing. The light double blinks while it waits for a ring. It gives one long flash when a ring pairs. Press once more to cancel.
- Two quick presses. Forgets the ring the unit has now and immediately opens pairing for a new one. Use this if a ring is lost or replaced.
Press that button quickly. Do not hold it down. Holding that button down for five seconds is a factory reset, and holding it for fifteen seconds is a master reset.
One unit, one ring
Each EZ-Switch 3 only answers the one ring it was paired to. Every other ring nearby is ignored. Two units working side by side at a rally cannot grab each other's ring. If you pair a different ring to a unit, the old ring stops working on that unit.
4. Run it from the Bluetooth app
The app is the backup way to run the EZ-Switch 3. It has two arrow buttons and nothing else. There are no settings in it. If you want to change speed, ramps, cutout or calibration, use the Wi-Fi control screen described in section 2.
Open the EZ-Switch app, connect to EZ-Switch by SkillAbove, and hold an arrow to run the motor. Let go and it stops.
5. Everything is hold to run
Nothing latches on. The motor only moves while your finger is down, on the phone screen, on the ring, or in the app. The moment you let go, it stops.
The EZ-Switch 3 also stops by itself if:
- Your phone screen goes to sleep while a button is held.
- Your phone walks out of Wi-Fi range while a button is held.
- The ring goes out of range, or the ring battery dies, while a button is held.
- The Bluetooth app disconnects while a button is held.
- One single run reaches 45 seconds. Let go and press again to keep going.
6. The control screen
There are six tabs across the bottom of the screen: Instructions, Control, Tuning, Info, Update and Remote.
The Control tab shows battery voltage, how much current the motor is pulling right now, and the highest current from the last run. The arrow buttons are below those numbers. The logo at the top of the screen pulses while the motor is running.
7. Tuning
Everything in the Tuning tab is saved inside the unit. It stays set when you unplug the unit, and it applies to all three ways of running it.
Top speed
This sets how fast the motor runs when you have a button held all the way. You can set it anywhere from 20 percent to 100 percent.
A slower setting also pulls with less strength. That is just how a DC motor works. If you want slow but still strong, leave top speed where you want it and turn up Torque hold.
Torque hold
Torque hold watches the motor current and adds power back when the motor starts to bog down. It lets you run slow and still pull hard. At 0 percent the unit does not help at all. Around 50 percent is a good place to start.
Torque hold cannot make more power than the battery has. Under a heavy load, a low speed setting will climb back up toward full power on its own. Set your overcurrent cutout high enough to allow that, or the unit will shut off instead of pulling through.
Start and stop ramp
- Off. Full power the instant you press.
- Soft. About one and a half seconds to come up to speed, and a little over one second to come back down.
- Moderate. About three quarters of a second to come up to speed.
- Heavy. About one third of a second to come up to speed.
A ramp is easier on gears, brackets and the motor itself, and it lets you ease into a movement instead of slamming into it. When you change direction, the EZ-Switch 3 always ramps down, pauses, and then ramps up the other way.
Overcurrent cutout
The motor shuts off if the current stays above this number for a quarter of a second. Set it above the highest current you see during normal work, and below what the motor pulls when something is binding.
The surge when a motor first starts is ignored, so a hard start will not shut you off by mistake. There are two more layers of protection underneath this one that you cannot adjust: the protection built into the driver chip, and a hardware current limit on the circuit board.
8. Calibration
Every EZ-Switch 3 leaves us calibrated. You only need to do this if a reading looks wrong.
Voltage
Put a meter across the battery pack that feeds the unit. Read the voltage. Type that number into the voltage box on the Tuning tab and press Calibrate. Nothing needs to be running while you do this.
Current
Set Top speed to 100 percent first. Put an amp clamp on the battery lead feeding the unit, not on the motor lead.
Here is why it has to be the battery lead. The sensing resistor inside the unit only sees current while the power pulse is switched on, so what the unit measures follows battery current, not motor current. At 100 percent speed there is no pulsing, so both numbers are the same and the calibration comes out right.
Run the motor for a few seconds, let go, read your amp clamp, type that number into the current box and press Calibrate. There is a Reset button on both calibrations if you want to go back to the factory setting.
9. Unit information
The Info tab is the unit's own service record. It counts everything no matter how the unit was driven, by ring, by app, or by the Wi-Fi screen, and it survives being unplugged.
- Firmware version, hardware revision, serial number and a device ID
- Total hours powered on, hours in this session, and how many times it has been powered up
- How many times it has run each direction, counted separately
- How long it has run each direction, counted separately
- The lowest and highest voltage it has ever seen
- The highest current it has ever seen
- How many overcurrent shutoffs, stall shutoffs and driver faults it has had, and what the last fault was
- The speed, ramp, torque hold, cutout and both calibration numbers it is set to right now
If you call for help, the Info tab is the first thing to read off to us.
10. Firmware updates
New firmware comes to you by email or text as a single file. Save that file to your phone, then do this:
- Join the Wi-Fi network named EZ-Switch by SkillAbove and open the control screen.
- Tap the Update tab.
- Type in your service PIN and press Unlock.
- Choose the file you saved and press Update Firmware.
- Wait. The unit restarts by itself. Join its Wi-Fi again after about 15 seconds.
The motor is forced off before anything is written. Your settings, your counters, your serial number and your paired ring are all kept. Do not unplug the unit while it is updating.
Your service PIN
Every EZ-Switch 3 ships with the PIN 0129. The first time you unlock the Update tab, it asks you to set your own 4 digit code. Please do that. Without it, anyone who can reach the unit's Wi-Fi could load firmware onto it.
The PIN only guards firmware updates. It never stands between you and the motor controls.
If you forget the code you set, email info@rvtesters.com with your unit's serial number.
11. The status light
- Slow blink. Powered up, sitting idle, nothing running.
- Fast blink. The motor is running.
- Solid on. The unit has shut off on a fault. Press STOP on the screen, or let go of your button and press it again.
- Double blink. The pairing window is open and the unit is looking for a ring.
- One long flash. A ring just paired.
12. Troubleshooting
No Wi-Fi network and no Bluetooth. The unit has no power. Check the CODDIWOMPLE battery and check both ends of the 8 pin aviation cord.
The Wi-Fi network shows up but the screen will not open. Open your browser and type http://4.3.2.1 into the address bar.
The ring will not pair. Make sure the ring is in pairing mode and not just awake. Make sure the unit's pairing window is open. If the ring was last used with a phone or a laptop, go to that phone or laptop and forget the ring there first.
The ring stopped working. Open the Remote tab. If it shows a paired ring but says not connected, the ring is asleep or the ring battery is flat. Charge the ring. If it shows no ring at all, pair it again.
Can someone else's ring run my unit? No. Each unit only answers the one ring it was paired to.
The motor runs the wrong direction. Direction depends on how that motor is wired. Use the other button. Bump it briefly and watch which way it goes before a long run.
It stops on its own after 45 seconds. That is the safety limit doing its job. Let go and press again.
It says overcurrent. The motor pulled more current than your cutout allows. Find out why before you run it again. It is usually a binding mechanism or a motor that is failing.
It says stall. The motor is drawing everything the unit can give it and is not turning. Something is jammed, or the motor is already at the end of its travel.
It says driver fault. The controller chip shut itself down. This is usually a short across the output or severe overheating. Disconnect the motor and inspect the cable.
It feels weak at a low speed setting. That is normal. Turn up Torque hold.
The current reading looks wrong. Calibrate it again using section 8. Amp clamp on the battery lead, top speed at 100 percent.
